A Contribution to the cost of this bridge was kindly made in memory of Walter Murray Grindrod.
Murray was born in Durban in 1935 and was a long-standing member of Durban Country Club. He became a junior member in the late 1940’s and was a member of this club for close on 70 years.
He started golf at the age of 10 – on these hills, dips and Swales of Durban Country Club, and whilst at Hilton College developed a real love for the game of golf.
By the time he had left Hilton College he had reached a handicap of four and matriculated as “Scholar of the year – 1952”.
Murray went on to study Mechanical Sciences at Cambridge University. He represented Cambridge University 1954-1957 (Captain 1957)
He returned to South Africa in November 1957 and joined Grindrod and Company (Pty) Ltd. He retired after 50 years with the Grindrod Group.

Murray was very fortunate to have a round with a number of players who won majors – namely Locke, Player Nicklaus, Jacklin, Goosen, Schwartzel, Moody, Faulkner and Faldo.
Murray loved Matchplay Golf and it’s conceivable that this bridge crossing to the 13th green could also be known as “ Murray’s Move” because it is at this stage of a match play match that a player needs to get a move on – Move to win , Move to Hold on or Move to Catch Up. The last five holes give those opportunities.
Murray was one of the founders of the Divots Golf Society. The society is an integral part of Durban Country Club.
